Most Peru vacations will take travelers to the marvelous Machu Picchu via the country’s capital of Lima. If you have a few days in the Lima area and are looking to explore outside of the city, head south to the department of Ica. Ica by bus is approximately 4 hours south of the capital city and provides a wide variety of activities for travelers. Paracas National Reserve:

A trip to Ica is not complete without visiting the Paracas National Reserve.  This costal reserve is full of wildlife, hidden beaches, and massive sand dunes, allowing for endless exploration. Explore the coves, cliffs, and beaches of Paracas from Playa Mina to the fishing village of Lagunilla, be sure to explore more than one area during your time in Paracas. Islas Ballestas:

Located near the Paracas Reserve, the Islas Ballestas are a perfect addition to your Paracas trip and time in Ica. Only accessible by boat, take one of the many Ballestas tours offered. This two hour boat tour allows you to see some of the diverse wildlife found at the Ballestas Islands. Home to one of the world’s largest sea lion colonies, a variety of bird species, and penguins, these islands allow for travelers to experience some of Peru’s diverse wildlife. This relaxing boat tour is the perfect way to relax while enjoying the marine life off of the shores of Ica.

Huacachina:

Found just outside the capital city of Ica, the oasis of Huacachina is perfect for your Ica travel. Many restaurants and hostels are set up around a lagoon, set amongst Ica’s numerous sand dunes. The sand dunes are the perfect place for some adventure activities, from buggy rides to sand boarding you can explore the endless dunes. Outside of these outdoor activities you can also enjoy the laid back atmosphere of Huacachina or go to one of the area’s many dance clubs and bars to enjoy some of Ica’s nightlife.
